The head is elongated but the ears are relatively small. The front paws are large and are used like paddles for swimming while the hind legs trail behind.

The soles of the feet have small papillae and vacuoles like suction cups to make them less likely to slip on the ice. These bears live along shores and on sea ice in the icy cold Arctic. When sea ice forms over the ocean in cold weather, many polar bears, except pregnant females, head out onto the ice to hunt seals. Polar bear cub photos can be seen on most bear photo sites.
