A small cage with walls 30 cm high, open on top and having a minimum floor area of 3,000 square cm will be fine for one animal. More space is needed for a pair of these rodents. As they live in small family groups in the wild, it will be better to have at least two of them at home. It is better to keep animals of the same sex, otherwise, soon you’ll have much more cavies than you can handle. A group of sows or sows and a neutered boar will be an optimal variant. Normally, these animals are good natured and rarely bite what makes them ideal pets. Nowadays, cavies are the most popular small pets in many countries.

The cage should be made of wood, plastic or metal. It is recommended not to use cedar because it is rather toxic for these animals. Long haired animals should be brushed regularly with a soft brush. Diet is also important for these rodents. These animals are mainly plant-eaters and due to this reason, they are often mistaken as herbivores. In the wild, these rodents eat various grasses, seeds, weeds, bugs, grubs and fruit. Cavies also need protein in their diet to keep them healthy. As they do not produce Vitamin C, they need a daily supply of it in order not to fall ill.
