These cute little rodents come in many varieties and the most common varieties found in pet stores are the English Short Hair. Animals of this breed have a broad head and short face. The eyes of these rodents are bright and quite large. Their bodies are long and their legs are short. An average life span of these rodents is 5-6 years. These animals have a distinctive coat. The Peruvian variety for instance has hair that falls down over the face and back end. If you look at the animal of this type it will be difficult for you to guess where its head and back are.

These animals were domesticated in South America where they were widely used by the natives as a source of food and it is still considered a delicacy today. These animals are very cute, funny, intelligent and sociable. They can even be trained to perform easy tricks. The gestation period varies between individuals. The average litter size is about 3-4 babies. They should be allowed to nurse their mother for at least 2 weeks.
