Pregnancy of these animals lasts an average for 63 days. If the litter is large, the term of pregnancy will be shorter and vice versa. As a rule females give birth to 1-6 young in a litter. The young are born fully furred, with teeth and open eyes. Although, the young begin to eat solid food and drink water from a container when only 2 or 3 days old, they should be allowed to nurse their mother for 2 - 3 weeks. As the mature male animals are bound to be aggressive, they should be kept separated. As the young males reach maturity, severe battles occur between them and the leader. The weaker males submit and are driven from the herd with a single female. Guinea pig gestation lasts about 2 months; these rodents are extremely endearing; find a picture.
