These dogs were bred to go to ground and get a badger from its den. Earth dogging is a serious competition that checks and confirms the hunting skills of a dog. Special trials that are occasionally held give the dogs and other earth dogs (such as terriers) a chance to achieve one of the following titles: Novice Earth dog (NE), Senior Earth Dog (SE) and Master Earth Dog (ME).

These competitions provide an artificially made up situation. Those who use these dogs in actual hunting may or may not participate. The dogs make great companion dogs, as they are truly devoted to their masters. Most dog admirers regard the breed only as a lap dog.
