The New England type is found in New England west to the Hudson River and south down the Appalachian Mountains. The Eastern type - in eastern United States and southern Canada south to eastern Mexico and into Central America; another population in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

The eastern type is more abundant and is expanding its range, while the New England type’s range is diminishing. These animals breed from March through early fall and the females have a gestation period that lasts about 28 days. The nests are lined with fur and dry grass. A peter cottontail baby may be found on a farm.
