Tigers are large white cats. The largest one is the Siberian tiger; it can be up to three meters long and weigh up to 300 kilograms. The smallest tiger is the Sumatran female tiger; its length is about 2.5 meters and weight is up to 110 kilograms. A century ago, there were about 100,000 animals on the planet, and there were eight subspecies: the Siberian, Sumatran, Chinese, Indo-Chinese, the one described, Bali, Javan and Caspian. The Bali, Javan and Caspian became extinct by the middle of the 20th century.

As a rule these animals are orange-brown with dark brown or black vertical stripes. There are patches of white fur between the stripes and on their stomachs. Stripes on the coat are a good camouflage that helps tigers to get close to prey when they are hunting. White species also have stripes, and they are not albinos. They are very rare in the wild, and only occur once per every 10,000 births. They have been bred in zoos and attract millions of visitors, but years of inbreeding has undermined their health and they have a shorter life span.
