This is a working breed that is used nowadays as a pet and a guard dog. It is very intelligent and agile and needs a lot of training though they are also known as couch potatoes. In early years, the dogs were used as fighters in the bloody sport of bull bating. These dogs were bred for strength, ferocity and tenacity. They were able to bring a bull down, to hunt wild boar, big cats and other large predators. When bull baiting was outlawed, the breed was at the brink of extinction, but a group of fanciers started to breed these dogs for temperament and created an absolutely reliable family companion. These dogs are the ancestors of 3 modern varieties of the breed.
