This breed is known to be the national symbol of Great Britain. The most important characteristics of the breed are: medium size, smooth coat, heavy, thick-set, low-swung body, massive short-faced head, wide shoulders and sturdy limbs. During the old times, these dogs were good working dogs. Along with Rottweilers and other large dogs, these creatures were used as guardians and warriors. This breed has acquired its name due to the cruel sport of bull baiting. When the bloody games of bull bating were popular these dogs were active participants of such shows. They were very strong and able to throw a bull to the ground by rapidly corkscrewing his body right when the big beast was off balance in the middle of a stride. When this sport was outlawed, the breed was used on farms and performed in dog fights.
