Also called English Bulldog.
These dogs descended from old Mastiff-type butcher dogs, which possessed vicious temperament and strong body. Modern dogs are smaller in size and not as ferocious, because bull baiting, their historic designation, was made illegal in 1835. English and French breeds are kept as pets. All three breeds are susceptible to hip dysplasia and patella luxation, and puppies must be X-rayed regularly. This is a genetic disease, and in serious cases it may pose significant difficulties when walking. They are also prone to entroption and ectroption.
