They come in a variety of colors including brindle, fawn, and various shades of red. Some also have white markings. Most show pets have docked tails.

The breed standard changed several times since the early 19th century. According to current breed standard, these are muscular, short-coated, square-headed canines with tight skin and a docked tail. Males stand 22.5-25 inches at the withers and weigh about 70 pounds. Females are a bit smaller at 21-23.5 inches and about 60 pounds. They need a lot of attention from their owners and will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. Early socialization and firm consistent training is a must for this breed; otherwise these pets may become dominating and stubborn.
