Today, this species is not endangered or even threatened; the number of animals has increased from 1000 to 15,000 after all kinds of hunting and body parts trading have become illegal in that state. The last legal hunt occurred in winter 1993.

The species was in danger because of habitat fragmentation, not because of hunting; forests were cleared and fragmented into small areas, where wild large animals cannot live and find food. Another problem is road kills, especially if highways go through the natural habitat.
